The Top End
The Top End is just what it says, the most northern part of the Northern
Territory. It is lush, green and tropical - a total contrast to the harsh,
arid beauty of the Red Centre. The modern seaside city of Darwin, the
Territory's capital, is the northern gateway to Australia. The Top End's
most important asset is the World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park,
renowned for its extraordinary eco-systems and the wealth of Aboriginal
history its contains. Aboriginal people have inhabited the land for more
than 50,000 years, leaving behind incredible galleries of rock art. More
than 5000 sites of historical or cultural importance have been identified,
though only a few are open to visitors. Add Kakadu's magnificent scenery
unique flora and fauna, and you have one of the world's greatest natural
wonders. Tour companies offer a wide choice of tours to Kakadu, Arnhem
Land, Litchfield and Katherine Gorge National Park. Four wheel drive
and conventional rental cars are easily arranged. Let the experts show
you around or pack a tent and go exploring - the choice is yours.
